Stable and equestrian solar case studies
The projects below are illustrative worked examples, modelled from real equestrian building types, evening-weighted load profiles and typical UK irradiance. They show the kind of system, saving and payback we design for livery yards, riding schools, studs and private stables. They are examples, not named clients, and the figures are indicative and confirmed at survey.
The pressure is real and rising. UK equestrian businesses face electricity prices roughly double their level of a few years ago, and in a squeezed sector, more than 250 riding schools have closed since 2018, energy is now one of the few large costs a yard can actually control. That is why owners of liveries, competition yards, studs and riding schools are increasingly pairing rooftop solar with battery storage to cap the bill that floodlights, wash-bay hot water and frost protection drive up through the winter. We do not publish named-client stories or star ratings we cannot stand behind. Instead, the worked examples below show exactly how we would model a system for your yard, and every proposal is built from your own half-hourly meter data.
55 kW on a Riding-School Indoor Arena — Daytime Lessons, Daytime Sun
Illustrative worked example. A BHS-approved centre with a large indoor school and an adjoining American barn runs lessons through the day, so its heavy lighting and hot-water demand lines up with generation, while winter floodlighting is the year-round cost driver. The clear indoor-school and barn roofs give the biggest solar canvas on the site.
- System size
- 55 kW (indoor-school and barn roofs, no battery — high daytime self-consumption)
- Annual generation
- ~52,000 kWh (indicative)
- Annual saving
- ~£11,000/year (indicative ESTIMATE)
- Simple payback
- 6 years
Outcome: Cuts the centre's single biggest fixed cost — arena lighting plus hot water — and stabilises it against price shocks, protecting margin in a thin-margin business. Figures are indicative and confirmed at survey; this is an illustrative worked example, not a claimed installation.
12 kW + Battery on a Home Livery Yard — Run the Ménage Lights After Dark
Illustrative worked example. A private owner running a small DIY-livery yard at home has a stable block, an American barn and an outdoor ménage. The real pain is evening arena lights in winter, when the panels are not generating. A battery shifts daytime solar into the evening ride.
- System size
- 12 kW + ~10 kWh battery
- Annual generation
- ~11,400 kWh (indicative)
- Annual saving
- ~£2,700/year (indicative ESTIMATE)
- Simple payback
- 8 years
Outcome: Evening ménage lighting runs largely on stored solar instead of peak-rate grid — energy independence on a rural, weak-grid yard. Figures are indicative and confirmed at survey; this is an illustrative worked example, not a claimed installation.
